MAIDANA COMES UP SHORT IN RECORD RUN ATTEMPT!
CAPPELLINI'S APPEAL IS NOT UPHELD ON GILLMAN!
VIENNA, AUSTRIA (8th September) - Two different drivers
did their best to add new results to their already prestigious careers.
On the water, Argentinian driver Carlos Maidana, took his OMC 3.0
litre engined catamaran out on the turbulent Danube river late in
the afternoon and did his best to break the speed record set last
fall by Alan Marshall of the United Kingdom of 136 mph.
Maidana, waiting until the river settled down after boat traffic
made it more difficult an hour earlier, made 4 runs on the 1000
meter course with a best time recorded of 125.893 mph or 202.600
kph. The 17.769 second time was quick considering all the cross
currents and swells that Carlos faced. Maidana may attempt the all
out record later in the season in Windemere where the current mark
was set last October.
World Champion Guido Cappellini of Como, Italy took his battle
against Scott Gillman to the U.I.M. protest committee earlier this
week, stating that Gillman had outside help after the first start
of last Sunday's Grand Prix of Italy on Lake Como. Gillman returned
to the dock and had his engine looked at after receiving permission
from U.I.M. inspector. Cappellini stated he received outside help
getting ready for the restart. A total of 3 protests had been put
in by the Laserline team against Gilllman after the race. However,
the final appeal of the decision was not upheld by the U.I.M. and
Gillman remains 2nd in the race and 2nd in
the World Points standings with 101 to Cappellini's 120. The current
World Champion will now miss 2 of the last 3 races of the season
because of the U.I.M. decision claiming that Cappellini destroyed
the timing equipment after disputing the time that gave him 2nd
on the grid in Bulgaria last month.
The 10th round of the U.I.M. F1 World Championship will
take place on the Danube River in downtown Vienna on Sunday the
10th of September.
