The MINES Resort City has been selected as the venue for the U.I.M
Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship Malaysian Grand Prix 2002.
The decision has been made after the inspection by the homologation
team from Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) on the proposed
area.
A homologation team headed by Mr. Jose Rafael Jesuita of UIM;
Mr. Nicolo di San Germano, the International Promoter of F1 Powerboat;
Mrs Lavinia Sanzovo Cavallero of Idea Marketing SA and companied
by Dato-Yahya A. Jalil, Managing Director of the local organiser
H2O Sports Sdn Bhd has done an assessment to inspect on the technical
requirement such as water depth, water base, safety, logistic and
the circuit.
Malaysian Grand Prix 2001, which was held at Tanjung Puteri last
year, has attracted more than 200,000 spectators throughout 3 days
event, which has set new standard of the World Championship. The
exposure has put Malaysia onto the world map and international event
calendar and has been adjudged the Best Organiser of the UIM Formula
1 Powerboat World Championship for the year 2001.
The MINES Resort City with the consent from Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew
has been given an honour to host the 8th leg of Powerboat World
Championship on 17-18 August 2002. Being the venue for the championship
will definitely put The MINES Resort City in the world map from
the biggest open mines to the biggest man made lake that can accommodate
a world class water sports event such F1 Powerboat.
