GILLMAN MAKES IT TWO STRAIGHT WITH A WIN IN SINGAPORE!
CAPPELLINI TAKES 2ND, DESSERTENNE 3RD!
SINGAPORE: (26TH of October) - American
Scott Gillman swept into the Asian continent and made it 2 for 2 winning
by a five second margin to move into 2nd place in the championship
in front of thousands of race fans who circled around the 1.8 kilometer
5-pin course at the Grand Prix of Singapore, the 6th race of
the U.I.M. F1 World Championship for powerboating.
The 44-year old native of Los Angeles, waited until the
half-way point of the event to move himself past pole-sitter and race leader
Guido Cappellini of the Zepter Team and powered away for his 2nd straight
victory and his 13th of his career giving him 67 points on the
season and now 18 points back of Cappellini's points leading 85 with two
races to go in the season.
Just as Gillman moved into the first position the two drivers
who were fighting for 3rd Italian Fabio Comparato and Saudi
Arabian Laith Pharaon got together in the corner with Pharaon barrel rolling
violently to a stop ending his day and heading to the hospital with slight
cuts on the chin, while Comparato's stearing was twicked enough where he
pitted for help and finishing a lowly 11th at days end.
The yellow flag brought the field to a halt with Cappellini
given first back from Gillman only for the Emirates number one driver to
repass for the lead 5 laps later. The Emirates Team from Abu Dhabi also
celebrated their 2nd drivers success as Thani Al Qamzi took home
a well deserved 5th place his 3rd straight top 6
in the last 3 events.
French driver Philippe Dessertenne of the Ligier Sports
Team had his first podium of the season with a solid effort starting from
8th and finishing a fine 3rd. For Dessertenne it
was his 11th podium of his career.
The other "feel good" story of the day came from rookie
driver Ivan Brigada who in his very first race came home 4th in
the seat normally occupied by suspended Russian driver Stanislov Kourtsenovsky
who will return at the season's next race in Sharjah. Brigada is the reigning
F2000 champion in Italy and did a great job in his first event.
Italian Francesco Cantando finished 6th after
starting way back in 15th because of a steering breakage from
qualifying in Saturday's 2nd session. His performance was a
good one but with the 6th has moved out of 2nd place
in the championship and is now 3rd with 59 on the season.
Finnish driver Sami Selio sponsored by Viemero struggled
from the start and moved up from 11th to finish 7th in
his 2nd race from switching from the Johnson to Mercury engines.
Two time race winner in Singapore from other events Jonathan
Jones of Cardigan, Wales took a fine 8th after spending most
of the last two years on the sidelines and moving into the broadcast booth.
9th was Italian Fabrizio Bocca in the Corona Extra machine after
qualifying 16th while rounding out the top10 was Belgian driver
Julius Leysen of the DanIta team with his 2nd straight would
championship points race.
The U.I.M. F1 World Championship tour now moves on to the
United Arab Emirates with the seventh stop on the schedule in Sharjah on
the first friday in December.
