A WARM WELCOME GREETS THE UIM F1 POWERBOAT
DRIVERS IN SINGAPORE
Singapore, September 17, 2004…. Final preparations were underway
today for the UIM F1 Powerboat Grand Prix of Singapore – a
course that is set to test drivers to the limits while providing
first class excitement to an anticipated crowd in excess of last
year’s 70,000 spectators.
British driver Andy Elliot from the Baba Racing Team arrives in
Singapore with a brand new boat built and tested by former World
Champion Jonathan Jones.
“Andy has invested a great deal of money in the new boat and
equipment and I’m confident he can do really well,” commented
Jonathan.
Tamoil team’s Marcello Menegatto is not racing here in Singapore
and is being replaced by their test driver Ivan Brigade. Well
known in the Formula 2000 circuit, Ivan is currently in 2nd place
and just 3 points behind the leader. Ivan raced for the first
time in Formula One Powerboats in Singapore last year and finished
in fourth place much to the delight of his team mates.
The course in Singapore is known for being a challenging one – extreme
heat combined with tight corners, rough waves and a smaller area
of water brings the boats closer to the crowds. “It’s
very technical, short and quite difficult to determine which propeller
to use as well as deciding on the overall set up of the boat. We
really have to drive this course,” said Rainbow Team Corona
driver Fabrizio Bocca.
“This year is bigger and better than ever before,” enthused
F1 Powerboat Promoter Nicolo di San Germano. “Thanks
to our sponsors Aviva, The Singapore Tourist Board and The Singapore
Sports Council we have a fantastic VIP hospitality area and entertainment
throughout the weekend. We’re looking forward to a fantastic
race in this truly beautiful country.”
Qualifying sessions takes place tomorrow Saturday 18 September at
13:30 and 16:00 followed by the six boat Shoot Out to determine the
pole positions. The Grand Prix of Singapore will start at 16:00,
Sunday 19 September.
Live broadcast can be seen locally in Singapore on Channel 5.
