GILLMAN TAKES 2ND STRAIGHT POLE IN HUNGARY!
ROGGIERO 2ND AND ELLIOTT SURPRISES WITH 3RD
Dunaujvaros, Hungary (August 8 th )-Defending World Champion
Scott Gillman of Basalt, Colorado needed a break in his hunt for
the World Championship crown and got it today, by putting himself
squarely on the pole for tomorrow's Grand Prix of Hungary, the 7
th Round of the U.I.M. F1 World Championship tour.
Gillman, who has now reached the top spot in qualifying for the
2 nd straight race, needed the last of his two laps in the final
"shootout" session to hit a time of 38:11 for a time of
151.14kph. The Markers-Belco-Avia Rainbow Team driver now has two
poles in 1998 and his 2 nd straight here in Hungary, after gaining
5 top-spots in his championship season last year. He is 13 points
back in the World Championship hunt and in 3 rd overall.
Starting next to the American will be Italian speedster Massimo
Roggiero of the Laserline/Castrol DAC Racing team with a time of
38:56 and a speed of 149:37kph. Roggiero, who is coming off his
first ever F1 victory two weeks ago in Stresa, Italy, got his time
in the first lap before shutting down with engine problems and not
completeing his 2 nd and final qualifying effort.
In the 3 rd spot on the start pontoon is the surprise of the season
with Great Britian's Andy Elliott producing a blistering time of
38:67 for a speed of 149.37kph and his best start by far of the
campaign. The hard luck driver in the World Duty Free/Tetlaw Burgess,
had reached the top 10 only once this season prior to today with
a 9 th in Chalon, France in early June.
Three time World Champion Jonathan Jones of Wales will start 4 th
in the Dragon Racing Seebold with a speed of 148.56kph. Jones 2
nd in World Championship with 57 points, 3 behind the man who will
start next to him Italian Guido Cappellini of Como, Italy. The 4-time
World Champion has 4 poles this season and today was his poorest
effort with a speed of 147.91kph.
Pertti Leppala of Helsinki, Finland will start 6 th with his time
of 147.88kph; Goran Karlof of Sweden is 7 th with a speed of 142.50kph;
Cipriano Lambri of Italy has his career tieing best 8 th spot with
a 142.81kph time; while Francesco Cantando of Italy will start 9
th with a speed of 139.46kph and rounding out the top 10 is local
driver Rudy Milhaldinez of Hungary with a time of 41:36 and a speed
of 139.26kph.
Twenty drivers from 10 different countries will battle the Danube
river tomorrow beginning at 15:40 local and 9:40 EDT for the Grand
Prix of Hungary, the 7t h round of the U.I.M. F1 World Championship
for powerboat racing.
