CORFU, GREECE -(July 11th)- 4-time World Champion Guido Cappellini of Como, Italy captured his 4th pole in 5 races and will lead the field for the 3rd Annual Grand Prix of Corfu on the U.I.M. F1 World Championship tour of powerboating.

Cappellini, who needed just 10 total laps of qualifying to set the pace with a time of 40.32 seconds around the 2 kilometer 3 pin course for a speed of 169.64kph. Defending World Champion Scott Gillman of Basalt, Colorado took a well deserved 3rd position despite having a brand new boat, switching from his American built Seebold hull to an Italian hulled DAC built by his rival Cappellini. Gillman who holds the course record he set here a year ago with a speed of 178.81kph after a 37.25 second lap, wasít able to match these speeds today because of the rough conditions on the back straight with numerous roller waves crossing the course. Finnish pilot Perrti Leppala looking for his 2nd pole of the year, could only do a 41.36 second lap and will start 4th. Young Italian Francesco Cantando will start 5th with a 41.41, while Massimo Roggiero, a past pole sitter here, will start 6th with a 41.53.

1992 World Champion Fabrizio Bocca was 7th quickest with a 42.01. Swedish driver Goran Karlof coming off his first win on the circuit in the last round in Finland was 8th fastest with a 42.62. Hungarian driver Rudy Mihaldinez was 9th quickest but crashed heavily in the 2nd session and will miss tomorrows race. Italian Cipriano Lambri will thus move up to 9th, while French driver Philippe Dessertenne will round out the top 10 with a lap of 43.39 seconds.
