KARLOF WINS FIRST EVER GRAND PRIX IN FINLAND!
GILLMAN'S 2ND MOVES HIM IN CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD!
Tampere, Finland; June 14 th - Swedish driver Goran Karlof
waited 7 years for his first Formula 1 victory and he couldn't have
done it in a better place, winning in the heart of Scandinavia during
the 4 th round of the U.I.M. F1 World Championship.
Karlof, who has raced here many times in the offshore classes, had
come close but had never secured his first victory on the F1 tour,
finally tasted victory, holding off World Champion Scott Gillman
of the U.S.A. by 2.48 seconds. Gillman's 2 nd moves the native of
Basalt, Colorado into 1 st place in the World Championship with
47 points.
The native of Stockholm was the third and final leader of the 50
lap event after pole sitter and points leader Guido Cappellini of
Como, Italy led for the first 5 laps before stopping on the course
and finally spinning out of the event on the 13 th lap. Cappellini's
retirement leaves the 4-time Champ with 40 points and 3 rd in the
title chase.
Picking up the lead was crowd favorite and Finnish native Pertti
Leppala, who had qualified 3 rd and who moved to the front on the
5 th circuit around the 2 kilometer 5 pin course after Cappellini's
stoppage. Leppala, who was in control with leads of up to 8.43 seconds
on Karlof, came to a sudden stop and failed to restart on the 36
th lap to the huge dissapointment of the partisan Finnish crowd.
With Karlof picking up the lead and Gillman trying his best to cut
into it, the 3-time World Champion Jonathan Jones moved up to 3
rd and settled for his 3 rd top 3 finish in 4 races this season
to move into 2 nd place in the World Championship with 32 points.
Italian Francesco Cantando was 4 th and a lap down but his 3 rd
straight top 5 finish moves him into 5 th place in the World Championship
with 31 points. Rookie Hungarian driver Rudy Mihaldinez was 5 th
, his best finish of the season, while another rookie, Sami Selio
of Finland was a surprising 6 th in only his first complete event.
Fabrizio Bocca of Italy finished 7 th two laps down, while Thomas
Ericsson of Sweden was 8 th for his second top 10 finish of the
season. Andy Elliott of Great Britian started last and finished
9th, while Italian Franco Leidi rounded out the top 10 after starting
from the 14th spot on the grid.
The U.I.M. F1 World Championship moves on to Corfu, Greece July
12th.
