ROOKIE CAMPARATO TAKES POLE IN HUNGARY!
WORLD CHAMP JONES 2ND; CAPPELLINI 3RD!
Dunaujvaros, Hungary (24th July)-
Italian rookie Fabio Camparato is fast becoming the new star on
the horizon as he captured his first pole position in only his 5th
try on the U.I.M. F1 World Championship for powerboating at todayâs
Grand Prix of Hungary. Camparato, who is joined by his teammate
Guido Cappellini, the 4 time World Champion from Monaco, will make
it a one-three from the start pontoon for Sundayâs 15:00 start.
The DAC Racing effort from Como, Italy has
been developing new hulls and at present it seems to be working.
Cappellini held the top time after the first session in the early
afternoon, but it was the current World Champion, Jonathan Jones
of Cardigan, Wales who was the man to beat after doing a 36:14 second
lap with speeds approaching 165 kph.
In the top 6 "Shootout", the final special
session of the afternoon where the top 6 pilots get a chance to
improve their times and race for the pole at the start of the field,
Scott Gillman, the two time pole position holder in the last two
seasons, improved from 6th to 5th with a time
of 37.3 second lap.
Massimo Roggiero, the Italian leader of the
Castrol Team, did a remarkable job considering he has been fighting
kidney stones, high tempatures and a brief hospital stay, while
getting the job done with a 36.5 second lap and a 4th
place start.
Finlandâs Pertti Leppala came out 4th
and ended up 6th with a frustrating 37.61 run, while
Camparato was next and did the first ever sub-36 second lap on this
modified 2 pin course with a 35.98 seoncd effort and pole position.
Rookie Italian Ivan Torta was a pleasant surprise
starting 7th in the Rainbow Belco Racing machine with
a 37.84 lap, while Great Britan veteran Andy Elliott is 8th
with a 38.01 time.
Hungarian Rudy Mihaldinecz, a native of Dunaujvaros,
will start 9th despite a sensational 360 degree flip
in the 1st timed session with a clocking of a 38.17 time in his
American Seebold wooden boat. While Italian Fabrizio Bocca the 1992
World Champion will round out the top 10 starters.
22 pilots from 11 different nations will take
the start in tomorrowâs 5th round of the 1999 U.I.M.
F1 World Championship the Grand Prix of Hungary beginning at 15:00
