CAPPELLINI WINS 4TH STRAIGHT OF SEASON!
LEPPALA 2ND & DAC TEAMMATE COMPARTO 3RD!
Dunaujvaros, Hungary (July 25th)- 4-Time
World Champion Guido Cappellini of Monaco, is half way home to having
a perfect season after winning for the 4th time in 4 races and move
into a commanding lead for the 1999 title of the U.I.M. F1 World
Championship for powerboating after a 4 second win here on the Danube
today.
Cappellini, whoâs teammate on the DAC Racing
team Fabio Comparato, was on the pole and took control of the first
half of the race leading until Cappellini came along side and moved
around him after the 2nd of two restarts in the 61 lap
event. Cappellini was a slow starter falling to 5th from
the 2nd starting spot, but moved past Gillman, with the
defending race champ dropping out early with engine problems, then
Massimo Roggiero into third before taking care of Leppala to move
into striking distance of Camparato.
Swede Goran Karloff charged from 13th
to 4th before barrell rolling out of the event with less
than 20 laps to go. With Karloff out of the event and the field
bunched up, Cappellini, who had moved to the front, got a break
when Camparato made a mistake and fell back from a bad re-start
having trim problems slowing his progress to challenge Leppala for
2nd.
Massimo Roggiero in the Baba Racing DAC machine,
did a great job of staying focused despite having a kidney stone
bothering him enough to put him in the hospital earlier in the week.
4th place was a great effort for the Italian.
Defending World Champion Jonathan Jones struggled
all day having started at the back after qualifying 2nd
because of a late arrival at the start pontoon. He charged his way
to finish 5th. Frenchman Phillipe Dessertenne had another
great race coming from the 12th starting spot to finish
a steady 6th and into the top 10 for the 2nd
race in a row.
Andy Elliott was at one time 4th
after beginning back in 8th, but fell back to finish
a statisfied 7th. Italian Francesco Cantando got the
monkey off his back by finally finishing a race this season with
an 8th and his first championship points. Local pilot
Rudy Mihaldinecz won the F3 event and picked up 2 championship points
with a 9th place after starting 9th on the
dock. Dane Gert Ladefoged back after missing the French Grand Prix
because of his wife giving birth, earned his first championship
point with a 10th place finish.
Cappellini now has 80 points after the 4 races
that have been run after 5 events this season, Leppala is 2nd with
54 points and Camparato 3rd with 39. The 6th round of the U.I.M.
F1 World Championship will be in two weeks in Moscow for the Grand
Prix of Russia on August 8th.
